I am a mixed media, conceptual artist. I used to be pretty timid about telling people that I use a process similar to paper mâché to create my sculptures, but God redeemed it for me! I LOVE LOVE LOVE to use newspaper. Many times while sculpting I will pause to read a story before taking the paper and twisting it into my piece. Many times, what I read makes me cry. Sometimes it makes me smile. What I realized is that I am using people's stories -- the heartbreak and devastation, to the heart warming and wonderful stories that are found in MY city -- I get to take people's lives and use them to create artwork that speaks a message of hope and encouragement to people. I love the beauty in that. It's so much more than a cheap resource. It's stories. It's people. It's my favorite redemption story of all! I also realized that if God is calling me to create...I better do it! I better not wait till I have access to a metal foundry, a ceramic studio...or anything else. Blessings follow obedience. Besides, I have come to love the meaning behind the work I create. If for no other reason than it speaks to ME. It connects me to my creator, creatively...and I absolutely LOVE it!
